COVERGIRL first made news last month when it named teen beauty blogger James Charles the first ever male spokesmodel for the brand. Now, COVERGIRL is back in the spotlight with its next influencer appointment – naming Muslim beauty vlogger Nura Afia its latest ambassador.
With 311K Instagram followers to her name and 215K subscribers to her YouTube channel, Nura first decided to become a vlogger after noticing a distinct lack of beauty videos featuring women wearing hijibs. This latest appointment sees Nura join Charles, DJ Amy Pham, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, Sugar Symphony YouTubers Chloe and Halle, and singer Katy Perry for COVERGIRL’s So Lashy campaign.
Revealing the news on Instagram, the brand posted: “At COVERGIRL, we’ve always stood for inclusive beauty that supports any all all types – from skin types to lash types… Representing all types of beauty, our #SoLashy fam (and their lashes) have come together to stand for #LashEquality.”
The campaign will see Nura feature in a COVERGIRL commercial airing in the US on November 14, as well as on a billboard in New York’s Times Square. In an interview with Refinery29, Nura explains what the role means for her: “I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale. I hope this campaign will show Muslim women that brands care about us as consumers and we’re important, especially hijabis. We can be featured on TV, can be featured on billboards in Times Square, can be represented.”
